There are many studies proved that learning foreign language at young age is faster than elder age but other researches contradict this theory. Some researchers believed that it is better for children to learn foreign language at primary school than in secondary school. I agree with them as learning other languages in earlier age has many advantages such as increasing children mental ability pick up language and enjoy learning with their friends. Also, the brain cells work efficiently at younger age between 3 to 14 years old.
Learning new languages at young age has many benefits. Firstly, children at primary school age are more active and interact much with their friends so this is a good environment for children to pick up language faster where it’s easy to deliver the language in games, songs and encourage children compete with their friends. For example, my nephew when he was at 8 years old and started learning Spanish I also started to learn with him but he mastered his Spanish faster than me because he was contacting with his friends and they were using games in learning. Therefore, the young age is a suitable age to start studying other language.
Secondly, many researches on brain proved that brain cells at age between 5 and 12 are fresh and work faster than that in age above 16. As example a study made in US on group of students at secondary school and another group at primary school. The study tests the ability of students in both groups to remember different words from foreign language in 5 minutes. The primary school group were faster and remembered most of words than secondary school group. As a result, the brain cells of the children at primary school are more active and do better job than that of secondary school children. However, some experts thought that teaching new languages at primary school has some disadvantage like distracting students because there is a lot of materials they have to study beside languages. So this will has an effect on the children to master all of this courses.
As a summary, studying other languages at primary school has many advantages such as increasing the ability to pick up language faster and increase the activity of brain cells which overcome the drawback of distracting students. Therefore the foreign language studying at primary school has more benefits than start learning it at secondary school.
