A person’s worth nowadays seems to be judged according to social status and material possessions. Old-fashioned values, such as honour, kindness and trust, no longer seem important.

Person’s worth has changed a lot with time, but richness and belongings has always defined people status, and the respect that comes with it. However, beside one’s possessions, history has been characterized by many others values which allow to evaluate people.
Take for instance the middle age, where society were strongly hierarchical, and the most respected people were the members of the noble class. As Machiavelli suggested, respect was a matter of fear rather than love, and beside social classes, people believed in a precise knightly code made with valour’s such as honour and loyalty.
This kind of values has been kept alive for centuries, and our grandfather never miss an opportunity to remember with nostalgia their old time, telling us how things have changed.
Today, in fact our society is much more profit oriented. Status and possessions are no longer associated with the family three, and anyone can achieve them with the right balance of talent, hard work and luck. Therefore, nowadays society is characterized by a strong competitiveness among individuals, which leads them to forget about old values in order to conquer their own success.
However, the situation is not so drastic, and varies from different societies. In my country for instance, there are small villages, outside urban areas where people still live in the same way they used to, 100 years ago, and their loyalty to traditional values seems to be much stronger.
To sum up, it is true, that today, the old fashioned values are tackled by the modern life rhytm and the individual myth, but doesn’t mean that there’s no room for them anymore. Is it crucial, that education and culture play their role, keeping certain values alive in people hearts.
