Academic - Writing Task 2 (Please assess).. thank you!

Post by paperheart »

Nowadays more and more older people compete with younger people for the same jobs. What can be the reason for this? What would you suggest as a solution?

In the past few years, there is a surge in the number of seniors opting for the same occupation as the juniors. This can be further supported in the recent job market survey, whereby there is an overall increase of 15% in the number of elders applying for the same job position as fresh graduates. This essay will discuss the reasons for this and provide several possible solutions.

First of all, the main reason for this is the demand for well experienced candidates. Most of the organizations, particularly those of multinational companies prefer to recruit employees with sufficient experiences and knowledges because they believe that would be easier for them to adapt to the company's working environment and comprehend the work tasks accordingly as they have had previous experiences. Unlike young employees who might need constant coaching and guidance from time to time to be familiarised with the job responsibilities. Besides, the need to sustain an income for the family could be one of the factors too. With the increasingly competitive job market, some elders might have to compete with others to secure a job that provides a living for himself or his family. What more to say when an individual is the breadwinner of the family.

However, despite of all the problems faced by the current job market, there are some possibly measures to tackle this issue. Firstly, companies can promote certain programs for fresh graduates or younger employees with inadequate experiences to increase the job opportunity for them. For example, PepsiCo, an international beverage company offers "Management Trainee" program specifically for young individuals that are below 25 years old and with one or two years working experience. Secondly, the government can also help to curb this issue by providing a more realistic retirement plans for its senior citizens to cater to the current economic condition. By doing this, it will somehow reduce the competition between the elders and youngsters in terms of job hunting as the elders are able to enjoy the retirement plans provided by the government.

To sum up, several factors have led to a rise in the job hunting competition between older people and younger people. However, there are also measures to tackle this problem. Most importantly, the enterprises and government are able to work hand in hand to prevent the stiff competition to go extreme.
