Should young people take a gap year before university life?
For some adolescents, taking a gap year off between high school and university has become an expected ritual for self-discovery purposes. They mostly utilise this time travelling or partaking in volunteering or part-time work. It is believed that this period of time can provide teenagers with a number of distinctive advantages, including establishment of social skills and widening occupational prospects.
Firstly, spending time outside of formal education indicates that students encounter more chances to interact with people who they are not used to communicating with. Foreigners they meet while traveling, volunteers or colleagues they work with are likely to possess diversified cultural or personal qualities. Subsequently, such a time span can mature students’ ability to understand different types of people and eventually enhance their confidence to approach anyone. Thus, this clearly demonstrates the fact that a gap year adventure enables youngsters to strengthen their social skills.
Secondly, a gap year break can offer adolescents with opportunities to explore various career options. Many of them are likely to graduate from high school without practical knowledge of what kind of work their desired job involves. Hence, having a time committed to doing work experiences or a part-time role can allow them to have a trial on their pre-chosen occupational plans. For instance, I took a gap year doing an internship for a local newspaper company. This experience deepened my pre-existing wish to be a journalist and I also became much clearer of what I want to do for my future.
In conclusion, the aforementioned ideas evidently display two reasons why taking a gap year is a beneficial experience for high school graduates; the development of social skills and hands-on work of their wanted job, can become invaluable assets for their life.
