The importance of biodiversity is being more widely recognized as increasing numbers of species come under threat.
What can be done to maintain biodiversity?

The number of endangered species is increasing at an alarming rate. This is the result of actions such as destroying natural habitats, poaching and deforestation. Preserving wild animals and plants is crucial to sustaining life on our planet. Building sanctuaries and conservation areas, raising public awareness about the importance of biodiversity as well as improving local economy through ecotourism are some ways which can help preserve natural habitats and in turn biodiversity.
Establishing preserved areas can help save wild animals and plants. Due to overpopulation, more people have encroached natural habitats and consequently destroy such places. Therefore restricting people’s access to these places can minimize the chances of animals being killed. In addition, park rangers can protect animals from poachers. However, building sanctuaries can be costly and requires constant attention which local government may not be able to afford.
Some irresponsible behaviors such as making wild fire, hunting excessively are the result of people’s lack of understanding. Authorities, particularly local governments should raise public awareness with respect to environmental problems. This can be done through media. Allocating a part of school curriculum to nature conservation is another way through which people especially children and young adults can understand the importance of wildlife.
Logging, poaching, overgrazing, however, are not directly the result of people’s ignorance but rather the result of poverty. Most African countries, for example, suffer from poor economy. As a result people are forced to hunt animals and cut down trees to make a living. Providing alternatives which can also help preserve natural habitats in these areas can be a viable option. Ecotourism, for example, is gaining popularity in such places. Local people now realize that they can earn a living by protecting wildlife rather than damaging it.
It is certain that without addressing local people’s problems, preserving biodiversity will be difficult.
