In some countries the average worker is obliged to retire at the age of 50, while in others people can work until they are 65 or70. Meanwhile, we see some politicians enjoying power well into their eighties. Clearly, there is little agreement on an appropriate retirement age. Until what age do you think people should be encouraged to remain in paid employment?

Mandatory retirement age varies from society to society, perhaps a reflection of economics, population pressures or simply value systems. Indeed, retirement at 50 can not probably be easily justified as, that at 70 we find even more efficient workers. This leaves no binding on age.
Human body has its inbuilt power to work and the metabolism is said to support till the person keeps working. The early man used to pursue the healthy lifestyle and under much cleaner environment they had better immune system and strength to sustain the workloads till longer age. Hence Chronological age is not always a true indicator of ability.
We can see that, some at the age of 65 also are more active then the person of 50. I personally believe that it totally depends upon the person's own internal strength and desire to sustain. It is normally found that person engage themselves in certain work even after retirement. Some do lack the passion and strength to work at age of 60 plus, they should take themselves off from profession.
Above all the discussions of the mandatory age limit to retire and what not, have we ever put a bar on age for politics ? We can see that some of the politicians come on their position at much older age and most of them are above 70 and some also enjoy their status at the age of 80. What passion do they have to bring the change and what can be expected from them. Perhaps, this is the main cause, why we lack turnaround in country.
People's suitability for a position should be a reflection of their performance in the job, rather than the number of wrinkles or grey hairs they have. Employers should be concerned with the efficient work they perform and for the non performers retirement or even early retirement can be justified. Indeed, it would work economical for an organisation to retain older employees when possible rather than hiring and training the new ones.
To agglomerate, we can say that there should be no bar for the healthy and ambitious people while for others the age bar should be raised to 60years.
