What are the advantages and disadvantages of living your country to live or study abroad?

Nowadays, more and more people have taken the chance to spent part of their life away from home. This essay will discuss firstly, the pros of learning a new language abroad, and than some of the challenges to be overcome in particular the estrangement from friends and family, followed by a reasoned conclusion.

The opportunity to master a new language abroad has become increasingly popular among some people. While learning at home may provide the first rudiments of a new language, taking time abroad usually results in the only tool available to pick up a new language at a native speaker level. A recent study from Cambridge University in 2014, has shown that the percentage of people who sound like natives is double in comparison to their counterparts who simply practiced in their home countries. As a result, people who have moved abroad are usually able not only to totally immerse themselves in a new country at the same level of its inhabitants but usually can achieve better job prospects in the future as languages are generally more requested in a globalized world by firms.

Turning to the other side of the argument, people leaving their relatives at home may often fall homesick. This is due to challenges that may be difficult to overcome once people sample a new culture with different habits to that of their own. The University of Turin have carried out a research last year showing that people leaving their relatives at home may experience the, what is so called “Honey moon effect”. While the first months of their experience abroad may be seen as an exciting adventure, it is only afterwards that people usually start to understand how they need to cope with the new environment and how tough that is. As a consequence, this can lead to solitude for a long period of months, unless people are not able to bond with someone in order to establish a friendship while also receiving support from that.

To summarize, living abroad is not one of the easiest choices. While the opportunity to learn a new language is an attractive one, as well as for professional reasons or personal ones, staying away from home may often lead to homesickness. Personally, I believe that the pros of taking time abroad outweigh the cons, as people are usually able to cope with new challenges if they really desire to achieve something.
