The threat of nuclear weapons maintains world peace. Nuclear power provides cheap and clean energy. The benefits of nuclear technology far outweigh the disadvantages. Do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer.

It was in 1948 that the world saw the advent of a weapon of destructive capabilities so extreme that two cities, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, buzzing with life, were turned to ashes in a matter of seconds, and the human race was made to realize how close it was to wiping its own existence off the planet. It has been 60 years since that fateful day; 60 long years in which Nuclear Technology has emerged as a source of energy rather than of destruction. But the image that its destructive beginnings projected has stuck. This essay seeks to establish that nuclear technology is our future and not our end. It is a solution rather than a problem.

First of its benefits pertains to the issues arising from the energy crisis. It is widely believed , by experts and non-experts alike, that many of the wars that have kept the whole of middle east in a state of violence and instability is a result of powerful nations and local groups vying for ownership of the precious oil resources. Were nuclear technology to be developed to the extent where it safely replaces petroleum, not only will it solve the energy crisis but consequently bring down the petroleum centered violence as well.

The second benefit has to do with its role as a deterrent. The energy aspect of nuclear technology is not the only part that promotes world peace. Decades ago, acclaimed Indian author Arundhati Roy predicted that development of nuclear technology for purpose of war will be a precursor to world peace. The last few decades have been a proof of this seemingly paradoxical assumption as there have been no wars like the ones that happened during the earlier part of 20th century. The role of Nuclear weapons as a deterrent is a one that has often been overlooked.

But, perhaps, the single most crucial aspect of Nuclear Technology is its potential to detoxify the world we live in. Were science to be able to develop a method to extract hydrogen from the water molecules, it will open up to an energy that is not only cheap and abundant, but also leaves no harmful residue into the environment. In fact , much needed oxygen will be released into the environment in the process of separating the hydrogen from water .

As we can see, the benefits that Nuclear Technology has to offer pertain to the most nagging issues of recent human history – namely pollution and world peace. This alone should make us welcome it with arms wide open, and not reject it based on its terrible beginning which is something it has gradually distanced itself from over the years.
