why do we learn language

Post by ucheoma »

Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language.

Ludwig Wittgenstein in his quote said ‘The limits of my language are the limits of my world’. The knowledge of language gives us an edge in life. Some people are of the opinion that single cause of why people learn new language because of the need to embark on tourism or for employment in another country. This essay will analyze these views

To begin with being bilingual comes with so much positives. Aside from the benefit of travelling or working in a new country, knowledge of a new language helps us to learn the culture and norms of most society. When faced with the task of learning a new tongue aside our mother tongue, we learn greeting, dressing and other social norms of the new language. For an instance during the elementary school days when we were taught French Language, we learned a lot of the things that one might wonder if we have actually live in Paris. Secondly, in these days of educational voyage, one of the pre requisite for admission into most institution is the ability to speak and write in the language of country. Another example here is the compulsory test of the International English language system(IELTS) being made compulsory by the likes of Canada, Britain and Australia. The total band scores of this test has even be reviewed in recent years to make sure that only candidates with the best English proficiency are admitted into English speaking countries.

Also, in recent times, scientists have discovered that learning a foreign language improves our brain power since we are made to task our thoughts and make them work harder. It is believed that there are release of certain neurotransmitters which helps us to expand the brain capacity. Lastly, when we learn another language we develop our confidence and also interact more with people around us.

In summary, language is not learnt only for the purpose of travelling or employability, there are numerous reasons why a new language is required

Hello!

Once again, you have provided an essay where the second main paragraph is significantly shorter than the first.

Overall, however, a good essay. (The question is pretty easy though - is it GT?) You use a very good range of vocabulary and grammar with relatively few mistakes.

Some statements are too general and/or incorrect, e.g. IELTS is not the only way to get into an English-speaking country (refugees!).

All the best,
David
